The town of Rattenberg grew up around its castle, a border fortress and toll station. Today, the castle ruins are the setting for numerous summer performances. The town's location, wedged between the Inn River and the castle rock, prevented its development in medieval times. As a result, Tyrol's smallest town, with just 500 inhabitants, has retained its medieval appearance. In 1505, Emperor Maximilian succeeded in annexing the part of North Tyrol up to Kufstein, together with Rattenberg. The town is renowned for its glassmaking. Look out for the multicolored facades decorated with stucco and pink marble.
