The beautiful baroque castle of the Festetics Kastély (Festetics Kastély), its famous Helikon library and its dependencies are the main attraction of this modest city of 21,000 inhabitants. At the time of Duke György Festetics (1755-1819) Keszthely became a center of culture and teaching that radiated throughout Hungary. The city is located on the western end of Lake Balaton, at the foot of the Keszthely mountains and the Zala hills. Founded in 1247, it is the oldest of the cities of Lake Balaton and the most important of its three capitals (Siófok and Balatonfüred), thus presenting the definite advantage of not falling into the lethargy outside the high season. Here we are in the heart of Europe, a small walk through the small streets around Kossuth Lajos utca, pedestrian artery in the city where everyone crosses and crosses, enough to convince themselves. The wooded edges of the lake are particularly suitable for romantic walks, the sand of its three beaches will delight families with children and tanning. On the main square, Fő tér, lies the Franciscans church, dating back to 1388, and the town hall, zopf or late rococo. The rue Erzsebet Királyne, descending to the lake and its beaches, is bordered by some beautiful baroque houses.
