Approximately 23,300 inhabitants. Novo Mesto, a "new town"? Not really. Settled in a meander of the Krka River, the capital of the Dolenjska region was already so named shortly after its foundation by Rudolf IV of Habsburg, who granted rights to the city in 1365. The town's main tourist attraction is its historic center. The city's museums are rich in archaeological remains. The region produces a specific local wine, cviček, which is a light, dry rosé. Stroll along the arcades of Glavni Trg and along the Krka River. Finally, Novo Mesto is home to a Renault factory and has become one of the country's industrial centers.
