The medieval village is famous for its religious frescoes dating from 1490 in the Church of the Trinity, perched on a rocky hill. Discovered in 1951 and painted by Jean de Kastav, they depict the creation of the world, the expulsion of Adam and Eve, the suffering Christ, the work of peasants through the seasons and the famous Dance of Death. Stone houses, narrow streets, stone arches and 16th-century ramparts define the landscape. The Hrastovlje 38 estate, dating from the second half of the 17th century, and Jože Pohlen's gallery, where his sculptures and drawings are on display, are also worth a visit.
