With its 19,000 inhabitants and 245 km2, this small town built on the site of an ancient Roman camp is the largest in the Vipava Valley. Today, only one of the original fifteen towers remains, standing to the north of the town. Ajdovščina enjoyed an industrial boom after 1945, thanks to the development of the food industry. The Fructal company, which produces fruit juices distributed throughout the country, and Mlinotest, a pasta producer, are both based here. Home to the Baroque painter Anton Cebej, the town also boasts a gallery devoted to the work of Veno Pilon, a painter and photographer who lived in Paris.
