We come to Duino, a small coastal town located 21 km north of Trieste, to visit the castle, standing on its rocky promontory and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Built in the 14th century by the della Torre and Tasso families, it has been home to such illustrious figures as the Empress Sissi and the composer Liszt. But it is not the only castle in Duino: clinging to a rocky spur, the ruins of a fortress seem to defy the sea since the 11th century. After visiting the castle, a walk along the Rilke trail, which passes through a nature reserve, guarantees spectacular views of the gulf.
