With 5,700 inhabitants, it's the birthplace of the poet Srečko Kosovel, who died at the age of 22 and so admirably sang of his land, the Karst. Sežana is a transit town to push further south to visit the caves of Vilenica and Škocjan. This karst landscape, with its poor, dry soil, is home to the prestigious Lipizzaner, the white-coated horse for which the Spanish Riding School in Vienna is famous and which attracts many tourists. Francis, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, founded the Lipica stud farm, which enjoys an excellent international reputation, as demonstrated by the 2008 visit of Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth II.
