To the north of Trieste, the concrete beaches stretch along the road to Grignano before and after the fantastic castle of Miramare. The town of Barcola is famous for its beach, which is very popular with Triestinians, and for its marina. Since 1969, Barcola and Grignano are well known for hosting the largest regatta in the Mediterranean basin, the Barcolana. Every year, on the second Sunday of October, more than 2,000 sailing boats, from the smallest to the most sumptuous, compete in the Gulf of Trieste. A spectacular race that attracts thousands of visitors (see www.barcolana.it)
