With a population of just under 2,000, it was here that Slovenia's first wine cooperative was established in 1894. While wine plays an essential role in the valley, it's water that's at the heart of it all. Indeed, the first settlements grew up around the two Vipava springs. In spring, the valley is decked out in the colors of blossoming peach, cherry and apricot trees. In autumn, it's carpeted with the red, yellow and green of the vines introduced by the Romans. In summer, the bora sometimes blows at over 90 km/h. Vipava, with its thirty-six bridges, is reminiscent of Venice with its pretty Glavni Trg square, but seems a little abandoned.
