Population approx. 12,000. Its mercury deposits are world-famous, its bobbin lace is renowned and the local ravioli, žlikrofi, are famous throughout the country. Idrija has always known how to distinguish itself. It was the first town to host a theater in 1770 and, at the dawn of the 20th century, the first Slovenian technical high school. The town's cultural reputation was further enhanced in 1997 when it was awarded the prize for Best European Technical Museum. The small town and its surroundings, nestled in a valley, are a prime site for discovery, with an outstanding Geopark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
