A medieval terraced village, its 15th-century surrounding wall was designed to stop Turkish attacks. This village, a pure product of the Karst region with its stone houses, was badly hit during the last world war, but remains the most beautiful in the region. Time has stood still in these ruined alleyways. Štanjel offers many historical and cultural discoveries. The surrounding area, much less touristy, is also well worth a visit, offering landscapes of vineyards and stone villages. Traditions are still alive and well. There are a number of tourist farms where local gastronomy is still the order of the day.
