Approximately 17,000 inhabitants. Until the year 14 A.D., the port of the ancient Roman Nauportus was prosperous. In the Middle Ages, Vrhnika became an important centre for trade with Venice, the Vipava Valley and the Karst. From the second half of the 19th century, Vrhnika experienced a certain decline with the opening of the Vienna-Trieste line, which ignored the city. Today, the city has a leather industry and an abundance of catering establishments, which makes it rather lively on summer evenings. While crossing it, you can notice the statue representing the great writer Ivan Cankar, a native of Vrhnika.
