Travel Guide Koungou

Koungou is the second largest and most important commune after Mamoudzou. It has about 32,150 inhabitants spread over several small villages: Majicavo Lamir (also called Majicavo 1), Majicavo Koropa (also called Majicavo 2), then Koungou village and then Trevani. It is after leaving the village of Majicavo Lamir that you can start to appreciate the beautiful landscapes on your right overlooking the lagoon. The city being located near the northern pass, many people in irregular situation arrive and settle there. You can only notice it by seeing the small houses made of bricks and mortar along the coast. Koungou is also the arrival point of the GR from Convalescence. Right next to the mosque is the town hall, now annexed, of Alsatian style, heritage of a twinning with a region of the Haut-Rhin. However, a modern town hall dominates the locality. The town is developing rapidly, benefiting from its proximity to Mamoudzou, with new buildings gradually replacing the tin. Several options for accommodation and quality restaurants are available on the heights or by the sea.
