This town is famous for its basketry craft centre and the countryside is beautiful, even more so if you are coming from Funchal, rather than from the east. The houses appear to hang on the hillside in dizzying processions down to the sea. Terraced crops occupy tiny bits of land, consolidated by low stone walls, accessible by acrobatic steps: there never seems to be more than 100 m² in one piece. You have to leave the street/road, walk through these almost vertical alleys, which lead to the mountains, to discover that Camacha exists
