Located just twenty-five kilometers north of Auckland and an hour's drive from the Northland region, the beautiful Whangaparāoa Peninsula runs along the waters of the Haraki Gulf (Tikapa Moana) to the north of East Coast Bays. Whangaparāoa means " whale bay " in Maori, a name explained by the high probability of seeing whales offshore. Stanmore Bay and Big Manly Beach are particularly well developed and the area is popular with affluent families from the metropolitan area, who come here to get away from the urban hustle and bustle. Shakespear Regional Park is the main attraction, with its gentle landscape and charming coastline.
