Motutapu is 15 km² in size and means "sacred" and "sanctuary" in Maori. This island is much older than its neighbor Rangitoto, to which it is attached by a dike. More than 178 million years old, it is one of the oldest lands in the Hauraki Gulf. Before its last eruption 700 years ago, it was still inhabited by Polynesians and was also a base during the Second World War. Remnants of this military past are still visible and several hiking trails are available for walkers. To spend the night, you will have to reserve a site at the Half Moon Bay campground.
