The Maoris were the first to settle here and found it a pleasant place (mild climate, fish-filled waters). They gave it its name, meaning "port of obsidian", a volcanic rock. Later, Europeans settled here in search of gold and kauri gum. Today, it's known for its magnificent beach. Whangamata offers some of the best waves in the country, and is a favorite with surfers. It's one of Kiwis' favorite destinations, easily accessible from Auckland. Whangamata hosts Beach Hop, a five-day festival of 50s and 60s culture.Tourist Office 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (✆ +64 7 865 8340)
