Once inhabited by Polynesians, this 2.2 km² island is now home to rare, endemic birds. Under DOC supervision, the takahe, North Island kokako and kiwi are now the main inhabitants, and some 250,000 trees were replanted between 1984 and 1994. This natural sanctuary is of immense value.
