With a population of 6,500, Warkworth is in the heart of the Kowhai Coast, named after the eponymous tree, typical of New Zealand. Located about 60 kilometers north of Auckland and almost 100 kilometers from Whangarei, it is a small and quiet farming town with a few vineyards and a pleasant hinterland. Tawharanui Regional Park is a great example of this on the coastline to the east, but Dome Forest to the west is also worth mentioning. Be sure to visit Parry Kauri Park to see The McKinney Kauri Tree, a Kauri tree that is over eight centuries old! Visible from the museum parking lot.
