With its distinctive shape, Rangitoto is an emblematic island in the Hauraki Gulf. Its volcano is the youngest in New Zealand, having emerged only 600 years ago. Its name means "blood-red sky" in the Maori language; it was so named in memory of a bloody battle, long before it was bought by the British in 1854 and turned into a nature reserve in 1890. Its highest point is at the summit of the ancient crater, 260 metres above sea level. There are several hiking trails, and you can head for Te Haerenga for guided walks. The island is linked to neighboring Motutapu by a dike.
