The main attractions of the small island of Kawau are the trails (ten to two hours of walking), the beaches, the wildlife and the Mansion House, a historic wooden house. Its name means "cormorant" in the Maori language. Located about 40 kilometers north of Auckland, this island of 80 inhabitants has become a reserve managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC), after having been a private place for more than a century. There are no cars on site, so most houses have their own access to the sea with a private dock.More information: www.doc.govt.nz and on www.kawauisland.org
