With 92 km² and 133 kilometers of coastline, it's a first-rate tourist destination, both easily accessible and a change of scenery, just 20 km from Auckland. Meaning "waterfall" in the Maori language, its nature, beaches, hills, bush and vineyards give it a special charm, and its wine is among the most appreciated in the country. Gastronomy, hiking, relaxation, water sports or extreme sports, there's something for everyone, and the island remains the closest place to Auckland to discover New Zealand's wine culture. Many of the island's 9,400 inhabitants have been working in Auckland since the ferry service opened.
