North of the Waitakere Ranges, this long beach, popular with Aucklanders, is a popular summer destination (many locals visit on Christmas Day). It's particularly popular for its waves, vast wilderness and colony of gannets. The walk between the two bays is a must: it starts on the left of Murawai, past the gannet colony. From here, several viewpoints offer impressive panoramas. The second cove is less crowded than the main beach, but just as charming. To get to Muriwai, allow 45 minutes.
