Located in the Guadalfeo Valley, on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Lújar mountains, it is the main town of the region and the capital of the region. Its 16th-century church can be seen from afar thanks to its twin towers dominating the village. This place, once ceded to Boabdil, the last Moorish king, as a place of retreat by the Catholic Monarchs, today brings together a large community of neo-rurals, mainly British. It is also known for its colourful market, which takes place every Thursday morning in the barrio alto, and its feria of Alpujarra products during Holy Week.
