This mountain massif includes the two highest peaks on the peninsula: Mulhacén (3 481 m) and Veleta (3 398 m) surrounded by an important national park. It covers a total area of 86 208 ha comprising 44 villages belonging to the provinces of Granada and Almeria. Hunting reserve since 1966 is also a biosphere reserve. There are more than 65 Aboriginal botanical species; on the edge of the Iberian Peninsula is the Alpujarras. Access to the park is done by road (A 395), which leads to the Sierra Nevada ski resort and continues at the Veleta summit, from there, a road goes down to Capileira, on the slope of the Alpujarra.Solynieve, the Sierra Nevada ski resort, founded in 1964, is one of the best-known and well-equipped ski resorts in Spain. Its geographical location, very southern, is also one of the sunniest, which does not detract from its charm (modern and artificial), etc. Its 80 marked tracks (of which 33 blue and 35 red) totals 84 km, there are 22 lifts (the highest one leads practically to the Veleta summit) and 386 cannons of artificial snow, and the station also has a station. cross-country skiing. You can go by bus or by car, with a bird's flight, the nearest village to the station is Monachil. The tracks generally open from early December to early May. Very well equipped, Sol y Nieve, rocked by the Spanish resorts of the Pyrenees (especially since a line of high speed trains AVE links Madrid to Zaragoza!), has trouble meeting the needs of the growing number of Spaniards who discover the joys of winter sports. During school holidays, it can soon be saturated, while the rest of the time remains under-regime benefiting, at the moment, from little promotion abroad. Note that since 2009 the station has enjoyed high snow for the season, open at the end of November, the station closed only in mid-May!Beware, however, be vigilant, due to the lack of regulation of many accidents there are recorded every season! The station doesn't look like a resort in the Alps, but the beauty of the landscapes is worth a lot.Like any ski resort, Pradollano (2 100 m) is quite expensive (from 35 € to 45 € for a daily package). If you don't plan to make a long ski stay, it is better to return to Granada (32 km) for the night, accommodation costs fairly expensive and there are more night entertainment in the province capital. Think about sandwiches!
