Roman tombs attest to the site's occupation since Antiquity. The site evolved from a hamlet backing onto a castle, growing to become a town. Razed by the Swedes in the 17th century, it suffered the effects of the Franco-German wars of 1870 and the World Wars. Reichshoffen's heyday came in the 19th century with the industrial era and the art of metallurgy, of which the De Dietrich family is the noblest representative. For the past few years, the town has organized a two-day summer festival called "Reichshoffen en fête", bringing back the life of yesteryear with numerous craft stands, demonstrations and open-air catering.
