Violay is known for its Matagrin tower, 2 km west of the village and the D1. This tower is located at 1 004 m altitude, at the top of Mount Boussuivre, the highest point of the Tarare mountains, separated from the Lyonnais mountains by the valley of the Brévenne. It is a circular stone building dating from 1876, which was once the hunting lodge of a notary, Master Matagrin, then owner of the surrounding land. On a clear day, the view is particularly exceptional. The site was one of the triangulation points of France. A milestone from the Napoleonic era inserted in the masonry of the tower bears witness to this past.
