Probably founded by the Romans, this small town is located near a Roman road. The Saracens occupied the area in 889. Saint-Etienne-de-Saint-Geoirs later fell under the domination of the lords of Bressieux, the town was for a long time an object of dispute between the Bishopric of Grenoble and the family of Bressieux. It was in 1725 that the famous smuggler Mandrin was born here. In 1790, the city is elevated to the rank of chief town of canton. In 1967 is inaugurated on its territory the airport of Grenoble-Alpes-Isère. The pond Chanclau offers a discovery tour on the local fauna and flora with educational panels.
