It is very tempting to associate the name of this Isère town with a famous Italian valley (Aosta Valley). The Gallo-Roman town of Aosta, named after the emperor Augustus, was born in 15 B.C. It owes its prosperity to its location at the crossroads of the Rhône, the axes linking Vienne to Italy and the Swiss plateau, as well as to its potters' workshops, whose products were distributed as far as the British Isles. Aoste is a dynamic town that has long lived from agriculture and silk weaving. It houses a Gallo-Roman museum, which has been awarded the Musée de France label, evoking daily life in the ancient town
