Saint-Julien en Vercors is a small village of 200 inhabitants located in the north of the Vercors plateau, between the Grands Goulets and the gorges of the Bourne. It was, during the Second World War, the setting for one of the first German attacks against the Vercors maquis. The farm called Peyronnet, located in the hamlet of Matrassière, housed since January 1944 the headquarters of the maquis. It was occupied by the Wehrmacht on 18 March of the same year and burned down before the soldiers settled for the night in Saint-Julien. 7 people were killed. A stele commemorating the destruction of the Resistance headquarters is located at the entrance to the village.
