At the origin of this village, three fiefdoms with Celtic names, Baix (the spring), Brion (the perched place) and Vellan (Wind Mountain) which were occupied by the Romans. The name Plan-de-Baix only appeared at the beginning of the 16th century. As the village was mainly Protestant, the Protestants had to hide, during the Wars of Religion, to practice their religion, often in caves. The lords of Montrond remained in Plan-de-Baix from 1650 until the French Revolution. In the 19th century, there were 394 inhabitants, all peasants. During the Second World War, Plan de Baix was bombed. Here, a war memorial pays tribute to the resistance fighters of the Gervanne Valley. Today Plan-de-Baix is a tourist destination with many accommodations, including a former summer camp founded in 1933, which became a family home in 1938 and is now known as the Eterlou. This commune of 140 inhabitants is still very agricultural and is a base camp for many hikes and a stopover for cyclists and motorcyclists.
