At Merpins Vieux Bourg (after Merpin from Cognac), there was a feudal motte and a church of the th century. But there are only a few remains left. The castle was demolished in 1387 during the 100 years war and the church was rebuilt in the th century. On the other hand, on the spot, on the edge of the hill, we understand why this place was chosen for defensive settlement at the confluence of the Born and the Charente.
