In place of the Gallic oppidum a fortress was built. After it burned down, a new castle was built. From this building only the name given to the commune remains. The church of Saint-Pierre-de-Châteauneuf is adorned with a statuary comparable in quality to that of the cathedral of Angoulême or the abbey of Saint-Amant-de-Boixe. The decapitated horseman on the frontispiece probably represents Constantine, liberator of Christianity. The narrow streets of the somewhat austere town centre hold a few architectural surprises: Renaissance chapels, 15th and 17th century mansions... At the exit of the town, the church of Saint-Surin stands in the shelter of a large cedar tree.
