This stone city with its feet in the water, one of the most picturesque of the Golden Saintonge, is nestled in a meander of the Charente. The village has a special history with this river which allowed it to grow and which still makes it a pleasant place to walk. An integral part of the Vals de Saintonge region and occupying the north-east of the department, the town offers the peaceful charm of picturesque towns that live by the rhythm of the water. The name of the town comes from the parish church built in the 13th century on the heights of the town. Travellers stop along the river to admire the houses "with their feet in the water".
