Green and blue dominate everywhere in this eastern part of the Charente, very close to Angoulême. The local rivers, the Tardoire and Bandiat, flow through hedged farmland and large wooded areas such as the Braconne and Horte forests. The presence of caves heralds the neighboring Périgord, while the area around Montbron is known as the Suisse Charentaise, due to its green, undulating landscape. The Château de La Rochefoucauld is also entitled to its own metaphor: the pearl of the Angoumois region is one of the many architectural curiosities of a land that has succeeded in raising its stones amid white waters and ancient trees.
