A strategic point of the First World War, the village was totally destroyed during the Battle of Villiers-Bretonneux (24-25 April 1918), during which Australian forces stopped the German advance. The city has had very close links with Australia since 1921 and is twinned with Robinvale (South Australia). The Franco-Australian Museum, located on the first floor of the Victoria School, has been managed since 1975 by the Franco-Australian Association of the city. Villiers-Bretonneux actively participates in the Anzac ceremonies, which take place every April 25 at the Australian National Memorial, 3 kilometres north of the city.
