This small commune of the Aisne, with a population of about 1,200, was called "Vieux-Maisons" for a long time. Viels-Maison is part of the history of France: King Louis XVI spent time there with his family during the episode of the flight to Varennes, before being arrested. Some monuments are to be seen in the village, notably the Sainte-Croix church, whose porch was built in the XIIth century, the XVIIIth century fountain and the incredible gardens of the village, at the chevet of the church, which are worth a visit. The village is also known for the castle of Viels-Maisons, of which a part of the park is remarkable, classified with the Historic Monuments.
