The town of Coulommiers retains a tranquil yet lively atmosphere that is one of its great charms. Numerous small shops have survived, and new ones are springing up all the time as a sign of its vitality. The town, crossed by the Grand Morin and a network of canals and rivers that can be navigated by boat, still retains many vestiges of its past, both in the upper and lower town. You'll find beautiful half-timbered buildings with wrought-iron signs around the Place du Marché and along the banks of the Morin River, crossed by numerous stone bridges. In the beautifully laid-out Parc des Capucins (one of the most beautiful flower-filled parks in the Paris region!), you can visit the Notre-Dame-des-Anges church of the Capucins convent, a monument built in 1617 and now a museum. The former prison, in the shape of a church, has been converted into a public library to remind inmates that they must atone for their sins. It is isolated on its island, as are the ruins of the ancient château where Madame de Lafayette set the plot of The Princess of Cleves. On the heights of the town, the Commanderie des Templiers, the best-preserved Templar complex in the Île-de-France region, and its medieval garden are a reminder of the importance of the town at the time. Renowned the world over for its cheese, the town holds its annual International Cheese and Wine Fair during the Palm Weekend.
