Inhabited probably as early as 2000 BC, and mentioned as a "free town" as early as 1307, the town of Benfeld has a rich historical past, but has unfortunately been the object of much destruction during the various conflicts that have profoundly marked the region's history, each in their own way. Benfeld is a starting point for hikes on paths marked out by the Club Vosgien, and there are easy cycling trails in the surrounding area. There's a lovely lake in the direction of Herbsheim, with a supervised beach in summer, and a snack bar open in season.
