Situated at the crossroads of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou, Montreuil-Bellay is Anjou's last key town. Around 1025, Foulque Nerra, Count of Anjou, decided to build a large citadel on the foundations of a Roman oppidum. During the Renaissance, the impregnable military fortress was embellished with a palace of Italian elegance: the Château Neuf. Built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Thouet River, it offers an unrivalled panoramic view of the valley. The old town, surrounded by ramparts, is a delight to stroll through, with its winding, flower-filled streets leading down to the river.
