In the heart of the Pays de la pierre bleue, Nozay is the southern gateway to the Pays de Châteaubriant. The name bears witness to the extraction and use of shale (300 workers and craftsmen made their living from stone in 1914), and the shale quarries that can be reached via the villages of La Villate, Les Grées and La Ville-au-Chef, bear witness to this industrial past. Nozay is linked to the memory of Jules Rieffel, creator of the agricultural school of the Grand Jouan domain. A past rich in monuments: the church of the Old Town (listed) is a rare example of medieval architecture. In the countryside mills, ponds and rivers display the charms of a preserved nature.
