Located between Pornic and Les Moutiers, La Bernerie-en-Retz boasts a beautiful beach and lake. It takes its name from a bernes (cloth and sail) factory founded by Pierre Bernier, and named La Bernerie. Previously dependent on Moutiers-en-Retz, the commune became autonomous in 1863. Renowned for its production of chattes, large three-masted barques with a rudder that changed ends, La Bernerie prospered thanks to its shipyards and fishing port. The typical architecture of its low-slung houses bears witness to the success of its ferruginous spring and sea baths.
