The Loire River crosses Ancenis the gateway to the ancient duchy of Brittany and, attracted by the Atlantic, its fresh waters mingle with the salt waters of the ocean. Originally Ancenis is an island whose contours can still be seen through the boulevards Joseph-Vincent and Leon-Secher. Some evocative street names and some beautiful houses testify to the incessant comings and goings of the gabares (river boats) loaded with salt, wine, grain, which traveled the Loire. The Loire is very present in Ancenis; in the landscapes that it has shaped by the whims of its course, in the brightness of its sky and in the jolts of its history.
