The Loire River crosses the gateway to the ancient Duchy of Brittany at Ancenis and, drawn by the Atlantic, its fresh waters mix with the salty waters of the ocean. Originally, Ancenis was an island whose contours can still be seen thanks to the Joseph-Vincent and Léon-Sécher boulevards. Some evocative street names and beautiful houses testify to the incessant coming and going of the gabares (river boats) loaded with salt, wine, and grain that used to travel the Loire. The Loire is very present in Ancenis; in the landscapes that it has shaped by the whims of its course, in the brightness of its sky and in the jolts of its history.
