The small village of Matzenheim is known for its private educational institution: Saint-Joseph College. But it also boasts a rich historical past, as evidenced by its remains dating back to the Bronze Age and Roman times. Less than 2 kilometres away, the village of Sand is known because Saint Materne is said to have baptized nearly 3,000 pagans with the water from the spring, which has since been named after him. Excavations carried out in 2005 along the railway track revealed two Merovingian necropolises straddling the banns of the municipalities of Osthouse and Matzenheim during the surveys for the creation of the third track.
