Mackenheim benefited from the commercial activities of the town's large Jewish community. The moving 17th-century Jewish cemetery, whose headstones barely rise above the troublesome grasses, and the synagogue, now a cultural center, bear witness to this past presence. The prosperity of the village, despite being regularly hit by the terrible floods of the Rhine, is evidenced by the beautiful half-timbered farmhouses with carved corner posts. Also worth seeing are the oil and grain mills, the town hall, the school and the impressive church nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Ried", a jewel of neo-Gothic architecture built in 1864.
