Leaving Marmande to go to La Réole, pass the roundabout of the Porte du Temps, where the sculpture of Jean-Pierre Dall'anèse is enthroned, you arrive at Sainte-Bazeille, which in the mouths of the people here is not very holy anymore. Traces of human settlement have been found dating back to the Iron Age. The name Bazeille comes from Bazella. This young Christian virgin was beheaded in Neuffons, today a small town in the Gironde. Her head would have bounced nine times and nine fountains would have sprung up... charming isn't it? In May, the town hosts the Strawberry, Flower and Wine Fair, with a traditional escargolade.
