The village's history is intertwined with that of the castle, built in the 13th century, and its lords, the Sires de Lichtenberg, then Counts de Hanau-Lichtenberg, who ruled a large part of Alsace for several centuries. Several of Strasbourg's bishops came from this family. As lords and later garrisons defended the surrounding area, the village fell victim to war several times; the war of 1870 left its mark after a deadly bombardment by German troops. The very active Lichtenberg theater troupe has been performing in Alsatian for 100 years.
