The commune of Réquista, situated at an altitude of 580 meters, is set in a verdant, rolling landscape. In the past, the village was one of the strongholds of the Ségala region, where the acidic soils allowed only rye to be grown. This is the origin of the name Ségala. It was in the early 20th century that the village prospered, thanks in no small part to the arrival of... the railroad! It was the train, in fact, that enabled lime to be transported to work the soil, and Ségala was then covered with a variety of crops. The land soon proved to be ideal for rearing sheep and cows, as the herds found rich, varied and abundant food all year round. Sheep farming thus became the main source of wealth in Ségala. Even today, milk production and ewes are at the heart of the local economy, feeding the Roquefort cheese industry, 25% of whose production is made in Réquista. But the village is also an old town, founded by Henri II, Count of Rodez, in the 13th century. Sadly, few buildings from this period survived the English and then the Wars of Religion... But old stone enthusiasts can head further south, to Lincou, to satisfy their desire for monuments and discover a charming little village on the banks of the Tarn, with its cobbled streets and staircase carved into the rock.
