It was the Benedictines of the Abbey of Vabres who settled this village and fortified it. The monks built a castle there in the 15th century, which allowed the houses to develop concentrically around the building. The bishops found it a solid refuge and decided to use it as their summer residence. From 1362 to 1370, this part of Rouergue is ceded to the English, so the castle must house an English garrison. During the Wars of Religion, Monseigneur François de la Valette-Cornusson took refuge in the castle and stayed there. It was in Saint-Izaire that the Abbot Mermet was born and discovered the famous menhir statues.
